skogkatt: (Yuletide Lantern)

As per usual, I've come at this year's Yuletide collection in an extremely scattered fashion. I've not remotely read most of the stories I'd like to, but I've dipped into things here and there, and I figured I should do a recommendations post now, else I might not get around to doing one ever. This is not comprehensive. It's just a few of the gems I've enjoyed.

Attack the Block

First, the story someone wrote for me:

Give Me Courage Not to Fear No One is a lovely look into the inner life and backstory for Moses. We watched this movie in November with my mother, and I was totally taken with the awesome dialogue and characterization, and I left it wanting to see more of those people, so this was wonderful. This story is like the movie in that it's at times funny, at times moving, and at times bitter and hard. I know that whoever took this on did it at the last minute, so I'm especially grateful that they took care to make something that so clearly took my likes and dislikes into consideration. It's really wonderful.

There were also two other stories in this fandom, and I want to rec them both because they're all really fantastic.

Save Our Sons is told from Tia's point of view, and is beautifully written. It shows us Tia being strong and practical and basically awesome. Yay!

Stand Up shows us Moses after the end of the movie, and again gives us Awesome!Tia being awesome.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch

There is only the past is a story about Zelda going off to Wales and getting mixed up with miners, one of whom is totally a woman. It's... very much not what I would expect from Sabrina fandom in one way, and spot on in another. It explores a little of the gender expectations on women in fields dominated by men, and it has bonus!Hilda being her usual silly trickster self. Lovely.

Jem and the Holograms

Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay is a twisted wonder of femmeslash wherein Pizzazz is getting it on with Jerrica. I'm not really into enemy sex stories as a general rule, but this is just so wrong it's right. Pizzazz is totally Punk Rock, and her horribleness is actually kind of understandable. Almost. And she sort of respects Jerrica (while hating Jem--hee!), which is cool. I give this the first of two Dark Horse Awards for this recs post, awarded to stories I would not have expected to like based on the concept/characters alone. I loved it in spite of my usual biases. No higher praise, right?

Love Actually

Alone Together is the winner of my second Dark Horse Award for this recs post. It's a post-movie look at Mark and Mia, which actually made me like Mia. Weird! But welcome! And I was pleased to see a possible future where they both move on.

Because at Christmas You Tell the Truth is a Mark/Juliet/Peter happy ending story. I tend to always love those, and this one was very sweet.

At the Still Point of the Turning World is another Mark/Juliet/Peter happy ending story, which made me especially happy because of the way it fleshed out Juliet's character.

Fluid Dynamics is a vignette which starts with Kelly being a rocket scientist and ends with Nathan getting them all into trouble. The author had me from the note, which explained that it had a teen and up rating "for language and ... being Misfits, basically. Crudity, non-PC comments, rocket science." The characters' voices are all just right. It's irreverent and silly and horribly, endearingly offensive in the way that only this show can be.

Fucking with Destiny is a wish fulfillment story, which solves the problems at the end of the third season. I don't want to say more in case of spoiling people who haven't caught up to the end of season 3 yet, but if you're caught up and you were unhappy with the ending, this is just the trick.

My Drunk Kitchen

En Flambé is the script for a My Drunk Kitchen episode about setting things on fire, and it is super hilarious. I don't think I really need to say any more than that, do you?

Oxford Time Travel Universe - Connie Willis

In the Blink of an Eye is a post-All Clear story about Polly coming back and readjusting to life in the future--with Kivrin's help! I'm super pleased to see women helping each other out, and dealing with the loss of people who were never alive in their present day to begin with.

Arcane Society - Amanda Quick

Four times Mr Harrow enjoyed being a gentleman, and one time she thoroughly enjoyed being a lady is a story about recurring lesbian crossdressing crimelords in the background of my favorite ridiculous historical romance novels. Mr Pierce and Mr Harrow are minor characters in several Amanda Quick books, but they always make me ridiculously happy. They run a significant portion of London's seedy underground scene, including the Janus club, a gentleman's club for gentlemen who are ladies in their daily lives. This is a series of vignettes about the couple, and it makes me ridiculously happy that someone requested it, and that someone else filled it. The writer got the tone of the books just right, too. Yay!

That's all I've got for now, but I'm enjoying quite a lot of the stories in this year's Yuletide collection, and also having a lot of fun with some of the things I've learned about through the [community profile] eastasianfandomgiftbag community, which is accepting wishlists wish fulfillments through the end of January. I've been stalking the wishes (and so far have even filled one!), and have learned about some awesome new to me things to check out, so I may be back in a while with more recs for either Yuletide or East Asian Fandom Gift Bag stuff. I love seeing people giving things to each other and sharing squeeful times. ♥

Thanks for the rec! A friend turned me on to My Drunk Kitchen earlier this year and when I got my assignment I actually fist-pumped and shouted, "Yes!"

Good thing I was at home. :)
